Food for thought, foods that are good for your brain and why
As summer is quickly approaching, many of our dietary choices revolve around what we’ll look like with our shirts off. But let’s not forget that the foods we eat also affect our brains and our brains are kinda important if you ask me. Here is a list of foods your brain will thank you for eating.
Fish for omega-3 fats
Over half your brain is made up of fat and the majority of those fats are omega-3. These fats are essential for brain development and greatly reduce the risk of developing dementia and Alzheimer’s. Fish is an excellent source of omega-3 fats and salmon would be a great choice because of its low mercury concentration and large supply.
Nuts & seeds for Vitamin E
Vitamin E has been shown in studies to improve cognitive function by slowing down the decline in brain function, and protecting it from oxidative damage. The best sources of vitamin E come from almonds and sunflower seeds.
Dark leafy greens for folic acid
Folic acid (Vitamin B9) is necessary for proper brain and spinal cord development for unborn children. There is also strong evidence that folic acid plays an important role for healthy aging of the brain for adults. A deficiency of folic acid can lead to a rapid decline in cognitive functions. Spinach, asparagus, and brussels sprouts are some of the best sources of folic acid
Berries for antioxidants
Oxidative stress, put simply is the damage your body incurs from normal wear and tear as you live or age. It has been linked with cancer and Alzheimer’s. Antioxidants combat oxidative stress and slow down your body’s aging process. Acai berries, blueberries and cranberries are very high in antioxidants.
