What's inside that protein bar? It's probably more than you bargained for

If you have a protein bar in your hand, put it down and finish reading this article. If you’ve ever walked by the nutrition bar section in any store, it’s hard not to notice the variety. They have meal-replacement bars, protein bars, fiber bars, bars for women, bars for men. In this article, I want to talk about protein bars specifically and how most of them have one thing in common. They’re full of crap!  “Oh, but my lemon zest bars taste so good” you say. If you want something that tastes good, grab a candy bar. You’ll pretty much get the same results without the false sense of accomplishment.

In my honest opinion, the supplement industry is packed with snake oil and the protein bar segment is full of examples. It happens all the time, someone says that something is good for you or you need more of something and people eat it up. Protein is essential to the body but how you get it is the issue. The halo effect is responsible for people gobbling up cases of these bars that are bad for you. The problem with protein bars is not so much the protein, but everything else that the bar is made of. I think it’s fair to say that carrots and celery are good for you. But if they’re swimming in ranch or bleu cheese dressing, would you still consider what you are eating as healthy?

The majority of protein bars are loaded with sugars, fats and other simple carbohydrates. They are also loaded with artificial additives that have been known to cause gastrointestinal problems. Now I’d hate to leave you thinking that all protein bars are bad for you because there are actually a few out there worth mentioning. Kind Snacks and Quest make great protein bars using whole ingredients without the hidden surprises. But now I have to ask the question, why are you eating protein bars? I’m gonna take a shot in the dark and say it’s for the protein and convenience. If what you’re looking for is protein on the go, a great alternative would be Chomps Snack Sticks.
