Sleep your way thin - How a lack of sleep can cause you to gain unwanted weight

As the world moves faster, the demands placed on our lives are becoming greater. This causes many of us to replace sleep with caffeine creating a vicious cycle that is not only unhealthy, but also the reason you may be struggling to lose weight. Getting proper rest is good for so many reasons, but I’m going to focus on those that affect your waistline.

First I want to clarify that sleeping more will not help you lose weight, but not getting enough sleep will cause your body to gain weight. You should aim to get about 7.5 - 8 hours of sleep each night. Not getting enough sleep will cause your metabolism to slow down and cause a hormonal imbalance. The imbalance of the hormones ghrelin, leptin and cortisol will cause you to gain weight.

Sleep deprivation causes your body to produce more ghrelin and cortisol while producing less leptin. So let’s get into what these hormones do. Ghrelin is the hunger hormone, it tells your brain that you should eat. Leptin is pretty much the opposite of ghrelin. Leptin is the hormone that tells your brain that you’ve had enough. I hope you get it now. Lack of sleep also causes your body to secrete more cortisol, the hormone responsible for accumulating body fat.

Further studies have also shown that the quantity of sleep is not the only factor. Sticking to a regular schedule will also help you achieve your weight-loss goals.
