Reaching ketosis, how to turn your body into a fat burning furnace

Keeping up with the latest diet trends can be difficult because there are so many out there. The truth is, that most of them are just a twist on an older diet fad created in hopes you’ll buy another book and help drive the sales of certain supplements. Before you get the wrong idea, I personally believe there is validity to most of them and choosing one depends on your specific goals.

The most common goal in most diets is weight-loss or more specifically, losing fat. One common theme most of these diets have involve reaching a state of ketosis. While researching ketosis, I found a lot more information on the chemistry behind it than you probably care to know, so I’ll try to keep it simple. When your body is in a state of ketosis, it burns fat for energy opposed to carbohydrates.

Reaching a state of ketosis requires you to switch to a ketogenic diet which is high in fat and low in carbohydrates. The recommended breakdown by weight is about 80% fat and 20% protein and carbohydrates combined. The source of your calories are also important. Fats should come from healthy sources so stay away from the Crisco and margarine and lean towards coconut and olive oils, nuts and avocados. Proteins should be high quality such as grass-fed beef and wild caught salmon. Your carbohydrates should not include those that are refined so stay away from the white flour and sugar and stick with leafy greens and other carbohydrates with a low glycemic index.

Turning your body into a fat burning furnace is not the only benefit of following a ketogenic diet. Many endurance athletes such as triathletes are dropping the high-carb diets for a ketogenic diet and experiencing increased stamina. Ketogenic diets are also known to lower your risk of Alzheimer’s, heart disease, diabetes and cancer. It will stave off inflammation, boost your immune system and there have also been reports of better skin and hair if that’s on your list of goals. The ketogenic diet has also been prescribed to treat epilepsy, depression and bipolar disorder.
