Healthy snacks to boost metabolism after a workout

Strictly speaking, metabolism refers to “all the life-sustaining chemical transformations within the cells of all living organisms.” There are two general categories of metabolism: catabolic and anabolic.

Catabolic metabolism or simply, “catabolism,” refers to “the process of breaking down organic matter and transforming them to energy.” Anabolic metabolism, or simply, “anabolism,” refers to the opposite process, that is, use of energy to build important components of cells, such as proteins and nucleic acids.

I believe it is good to start this article to make these distinctions, as it seems that most people equate metabolism with just the breakdown of food into energy – i.e., burn off the fat, lose weight. Although burning off fat and other food stuffs into energy is a significant part of metabolism, it is only part of it. The other important component is building and repair of cells and tissues.

Similarly, it is important to remember that a successful health and fitness plan, including weight loss, is allowing our bodies to properly recover after a workout and build muscles and other tissues including our blood cells. This can only be done through proper rest and recovery after a workout, sleep and of course, diet.

It is also a well-known fact that the more muscles than fat we have the faster our metabolism is. The reason being, muscles (which is mostly composed of proteins), require more energy than do fats.

Currently, the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for 0.8 gm of protein per kilogram of body weight, although studies have also shown, 1 to 1.2 gm protein may be protective against age-related muscle loss. To learn more about your specific RDA for your age, gender, health/medical condition, it is best to work with a Registered Nutritionist-Dietitian.

In this article however, we have come up with a list of best yummy snacks that you can eat after a workout to help boost and support your body's metabolism:

  1. Chocolate Milk

Studies have shown that drinking chocolate milk within 15 minutes after your workout has many benefits. Chocolate milk has a high protein content, about 8-11 gm/cup. Compared to plain milk, it has double the carbohydrate content, which is ideal for tired muscles. The high water content replaces fluid lost from sweating and help prevent dehydration. And finally, it also contains a significant amount of calcium, vitamin D, sodium and sugar which helps you retain water and regain energy.

  1. Avocado

  1. Cheese
