Congrats to our very own Iron Girl

You may or may not know that two weeks ago on Sunday 16th June the Iron Girl triathlon took place in Lake Zurich, IL. Iron Girl is the largest set of athletic events, set up by women- for women. Their goal is to empower women to lead healthier life-styles: a goal which we too share. This was a fantastic event which is completely in line with what we at Chomps are striving to do- make people realize how great and rewarding it can be, to ditch the lazy life-style so many of us have become accustomed to leading, ditch the crap that so many of us find ourselves eating far too often- and make the effort to treat our bodies with the respect they deserve.

Iron Girl does not discriminate when it comes to fitness levels- they have an event for women/girls of all ages and fitness levels.

It shouldn’t surprise you that one of our own; Steph, participated in the Iron Girl triathlon- and did us extremely proud!

The triathlon consisted of a 1/3 Mile Swim, 14 Mile Bike and 3 Mile Run- so this was no easy task. It took a lot of work, dedication and courage on Steph’s part- but she was certainly up for the challenge and worked her butt off to make sure she could complete it.


In Steph’s own words “The triathlon was something I have been wanting to do for a while now and I wanted to set a new goal for myself. I have done plenty of races and competitive sports but this was something different. A much bigger competition. Running is something I find easy, biking was easy once I got comfortable with riding a fast road bike but swimming is by far the most challenging aspect of the race. I trained for 8 weeks and really focused on my endurance.”


She had never swum in this kind of environment prior to starting her training- nor had she ever been in a situation where she needed to swim in a wet suit. It really isn’t an easy thing to do, nor is it easy to transition from the swimming to the biking part of it. Despite quite a nasty fall which resulted in a big bruise, she didn’t stop and ran her ass off at the end to make sure she finished in the best time she could!


This was Steph’s first sprint triathlon ever!!!! She trained hard and completed the event in 1:29:30, coming 6th in her age group. Not too bad for a first timer at all!!!!!


In fact, she felt so great after she completed the triathlon that she said she could have kept going! She is already gearing up for the Olympic Triathlon on August 11 in Chicago- which is a longer event than the sprint distance she just completed. I think most people who participate in such events often feel like they want to continue pushing themselves to see how far they can go, since they realize what their body is capable of achieving when they find the courage and dedication to sign up for events like this.


Steph is planning to train even harder this time around: “my goal is to beat my time and cut my transitions times down significantly.”


In terms of changing her strategy this time, here’s what she had to say: “I need to practice swimming in open water, just to be more prepared for the elements. The pool is not the same! I thought I was not going to make it one point during the swim. I really need to swim more to be more prepared for next time! Eating Chomps and being mentally prepared helped me to see the finish line.”
